# Defend our Democracy supports the call for an inquiry into the Stilfontein illegal miners
# The GOOD Party calls on Cape Town to engage with industry leaders regarding testing protocols at its beaches
# And cricket: Paarl Royals batsmen shine with a record-breaking performance against Pretoria Capitals in an SA20 encounter
# Defend our Democracy says it supports the call for an inquiry into wilful negligence that has resulted in illegal miners starving to death at the Buffelsfontein Mine Shaft in Stilfontein in North West. Spokesperson Andries Sibanyoni says 78 bodies were retrieved after a Court ordered rescue operation was initiated, and 246 other people were found alive. He says the right to life, which is Constitutionally guaranteed, irrespective of a person’s nationality or legal status, was violated:
In another development Healthcare Workers 4 Palestine – South Africa is calling on government to give the rescued Stilfontein miners adequate medical attention. Many of the surviving miners have emerged emaciated and in chronically poor health as a result of longstanding malnutrition, dehydration, and a host of infectious diseases which they claim have been exacerbated by recent police action. Healthcare Workers 4 Palestine says re-feeding syndrome, which has a mortality rate of 35-70-percent, is a serious and potentially lethal concern among the miners.
# The GOOD Party is calling on the City of Cape Town to engage with industry leaders, academics, medical doctors and marine conservationists regarding testing protocols at the city’s beaches. GOOD National Youth chairperson, Kaden Arguile, says according to the Project Blue report, Blue Flag beaches, Camps Bay and Clifton saw alarming levels of Enterococci during the festive season. He says this investigation raises concerns about the city’s sewage treatment protocols, regulations and monitoring:
# Cricket: Joe Root and David Miller steered the Paarl Royals to an eight-wicket SA20 victory against Pretoria Capitals in Centurion yesterday. The visitors had to chase down the hosts’ 213 runs. Root managed 92 off 60 balls with Miller scoring 48 off just 24 balls, while Rubin Hermann’s 56 off 33 balls clinched it for the Paarl Royals, with two balls remaining. And at Newlands last night MI Cape Town beat the Johannesburg Super Kings by seven wickets, scoring 173 for 3, with 25 balls remaining, against the visitors’ 172 for 5.
# And, US president-elect Donald Trump says he will “most likely” give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a potential ban after he takes office on Monday, as the app with 170-million American users buzzed with nervous anticipation ahead of a shutdown set for Sunday. The Chinese-owned app said on Friday it would have to ‘go dark’ in the US on Sunday unless president Joe Biden’s administration provides assurances to companies such as Apple and Google that they will not face enforcement actions when a ban takes effect.
