# Lesotho anticipates economic and energy benefits amid the launch of Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project
# The Bureau for Economic Research says multiple interest rate cuts are still possible
# And cricket: Gerald Coetzee is in doubt for the Champions Cup and the rest of the SA20
# Lesotho prime minister, Lebona Lephema, has praised the launch of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, highlighting its economic and energy benefits. The first of two tunnel boring machine seeks to address Gauteng’s water challenges. The 39-billion-rand project is expected to be concluded in 2028, with hydropower following in 2029. The prime minister says the South Africa-Lesotho partnership will enhance collaborative efforts in the region:
In another development, Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project has officially launched its tunnel boring machine, marking a major step toward alleviating Gauteng’s water challenges. The project will create a 38-kilometer gravity tunnel connecting the Polihali and Katse Reservoirs. Expected to be completed by 2028, this public-private partnership includes hydropower development. South Africa high commissioner to Lesotho, Constance Seoposengwe, says this milestone enhances collaborative efforts between the two countries:
# The Bureau for Economic Research says the South African Reserve Bank still has room to cut interest rates despite challenges from rising oil prices and a weak rand. According to Business Tech, the bureau suggests a possible cut in January and again in March, maintaining inflation expectations within the Reserve Bank’s 4.5-percent target. The bureau says there is, however, an increased risk that the Reserve Bank keeps the rate on hold in January and/or March.
# The DA in Johannesburg says the appointment of acting city manager Tshepo Makola is illegal. The party argues under the Municipal Systems Act, such an appointment must be approved by the city council before it can take effect, but Makola began his role last month without the necessary approval. The DA’s Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjok says only the council has the authority to make this decision and warns of potential legal challenges:
# And cricket: South Africa could have a fast bowler problem for the Champions Trophy following the news of Gerald Coetzee’s hamstring issue. He was expected to be named in the squad following Anrich Nortjé’s withdrawal due to a back injury. Coetzee wasn’t included in Joburg Super Kings’ squad for the rained-out SA20 encounter with Pretoria Capitals and is in doubt for the rest of the tournament. White-ball coach Rob Walter could utilise inexperienced bowlers Kwena Maphaka or Corbin Bosch if Coetzee can’t travel to Pakistan.
