Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz eased past Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. Djokovic says reaching these milestones is special:
And in more news from the Australian Open, two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is through to the third round after beating Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, 6-3, 7-5. The Belarusian was 5-2 down in the second set before mounting a comeback. German veteran Laura Siegemund caused the biggest shock in Melbourne so far when she stunned Olympic singles gold medallist Qinwen Zheng of China, 7-6, 6-3. Another two-time winner Naomi Osaka of Japan came from a set down to beat Czech’s Karolina Muchova, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
# Cricket: Pretoria Capitals secured their first victory of the SA20 campaign with a six-wicket bonus point win over defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Daryn Dupavillion took two wickets as the Sunrisers were bowled out for just 113. In reply, an unbeaten 55-run partnership between Liam Livingstone and Marques Ackerman carried the Capitals to victory. In Durban, the Joburg Super Kings claimed a 28-run win over Durban’s Super Giants to remain unbeaten. JSK captain, Faf du Plessis, says the wicket was difficult to score on:
# Soccer: Liverpool stretched their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 16 games after clinching a one-all draw against Nottingham Forest. Diogo Jota’s goal for Liverpool levelled it up after Chris Wood’s early strike, as Arne Slot’s side stay six points clear at the top. Meanwhile, reigning champions Manchester City threw away a two-nil lead to draw two-all against Brentford. City are now 12 points behind Liverpool. City manager, Pep Guardiola, says they did not make the right decisions at crucial moments:
# And finally, Golf: Two-time major champion Jon Rahm says the lack of world ranking points available for LIV players is unfair. The World Ranking system rejected LIV’s application in 2023 after the league failed to meet two key criteria for inclusion. The decision effectively blocked LIV from major championship eligibility, where spots are guaranteed based on world ranking position. Rahm says at this point to not give LIV world ranking points and the credibility it deserves is wrong.
