# Boitumelo Media has announced the inaugural Community Radio Awards, set for the 25th of April. This event honours community radio stations and contributors advancing local storytelling, social justice, and cultural expression. Categories include Best Community Programme and Hall of Fame inductees amongst others. Nominations, featuring audio profiles and written motivations, close on the 28th of February. Founder Motseki Mabuya highlights the critical role of community radio in fostering dialogue and cultural connection.
# Cape Town Chess says it will continue to collaborate with the University of the Western Cape to assist it in further developing chess on campus. The university hosted the 2025 Cape Town Masters’ Chess Challenge at the Jakes Gerwel Hall last week. The six-day event brought together chess players from around Cape Town, some as young as eleven. UWC says it is important to raise awareness about the game and encourage people to take up the challenge and play a round of chess.
# A total of 20 offenders and 16 parolees recently helped clean three schools in Cape Town ahead of the start of the 2025 academic year on Wednesday. The schools were Tembaletu Special School in Gugulethu, Zimasa Primary in Langa, and Thembelihle High School in Khayelitsha. Department of Correctional Services spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, says these kinds of programmes assist in the rehabilitation of prisoners and their acceptance one day back into society.
# All six South African dollar billionaires increased their fortunes in 2024. This is according to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaire list, which only includes people whose net worth is more than 19-billion-rand. The luxury goods magnate and Remgro chairperson Johann Rupert and his family and diamond and mining giant Nicky Oppenheimer and his family both added over one-billion-rand to their fortunes. Capitec founder Michiel le Roux and businessman Christo Wiese increased their wealth by more than 50-percent last year. Naspers chairperson Koos Bekker and businessman Patrice Motsepe are also on the list.
# And finally: Lionsgate’s heist thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera debuted at number one in North American theatres over the weekend. The film starring Gerard Butler follows a gritty Los Angeles police officer on the hunt in Europe to track down ex-marine-turned-robber Donnie, played by O’Shea Jackson Junior, who is plotting a massive diamond heist. Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King stayed in second place in its fourth weekend of release with Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in third.
