# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa has warned that corrupt and extortionist members within party ranks risk expulsion from the party, emphasising that the ANC faces an existential crisis. Delivering the January 8 statement in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape, Ramaphosa declared 2025 as a year of renewal, focusing on strengthening ANC branches, improving governance, and implementing consequence management. He highlighted efforts to rebuild, and enhance leadership accountability:
Meanwhile, a political analyst Ntsikelelo Breakfast has expressed skepticism about the ANC’s renewal after Ramaphosa’s declared 2025 the year of renewal. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Breakfast criticised the ANC for relying on historical events to maintain influence, urging the party to address internal challenges like corruption avoid political gamesmanship:
# The South African Depression and Anxiety Group has called on the matric class of 2024 to remain calm ahead of the release of the National Senior Certificate results this week. Sadag’s, Roshni Parbhoo-Seetha, says they have noted a surge in calls from matrics who are anxious about their results. She adds that the organisation is handling approximately two-thousand calls daily:
# Nearly one-thousand incarcerated men and women have joined the frontlines in a battle against record-breaking wildfires burning across southern California. The prisoners are part of a long-running volunteer programme led by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. They have been drawn from among the 35 conservation fire camps run by the state, minimum-security facilities where inmates serve their time and receive training. Two of the camps are for incarcerated women. The programme dates back to 1946 and has divided critics, who see it as exploitative, and supporters, who say it is rehabilitative.
# Rugby: The Bulls hopes of qualifying for the playoff rounds of the Champions’ Cup lay in tatters, after they were hammered 49-10 by French side Castres. The result is the fourth straight defeat for Jake White’s side – three in the Champions’ Cup and the Sharks game in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, while they remain without a point on the log. Meanwhile in Durban the defending Champions’ Cup title holders Toulouse gave the Sharks a painful rugby lesson. They struggled with the Durban conditions but still recorded an easy 20-8 victory over the Sharks.
