# The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa is calling on the South African Council for Educators to investigate the alleged rise in unqualified teachers working at schools. This comes after the Foundation for Education and Social Justice Africa revealed that it has received an alarming number of reports of under and unqualified educators, including students, hired to teaching posts at some private schools across the country. Naptosa’s executive director, Basil Manuel, told Newzroom Afrika that schools must be held accountable by parents:
# Airlink has resumed flights to Nampula, Mozambique, after suspending the route due to threats of aircraft seizure linked to a local court order. Airlink CEO Rodger Foster says the dispute stems from a damages claim filed by two passengers removed for unruly behaviour. The airline handles 70-percent of air traffic between the two countries. He says that following reassurances from Mozambican and South African authorities, Airlink restored service while monitoring the situation.
# The DA in Gauteng is urging all parents whose children have still not been placed at a school to use the walk-in centres set up by the provincial Department of Education. The department has extended the online placement deadlines for Grades 1 and 8 to the 30th of this month. The DA’s, Sergio Isa Dos Santos, says while the extension may provide brief relief to parents and guardians, it underscores the chronic issues plaguing the province’s education system:
# US president Joe Biden says the federal government is increasing its funding to assist with the response to the wildfires in Los Angeles to 100-percent. This comes after California governor Gavin Newsom asked the president to increase the percentage of authorised funding to 90-percent. The death toll from the wildfires has now risen to seven with forecasters warning more high winds may fan the flames further. Biden says the federal government is doing everything it can to help those affected:
# Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg was sentenced to supervision for a year, avoiding a jail term after admitting he had abused his estranged wife over five years. The 32-year old Hogg, who now plays for French club Montpellier, admitted shouting and swearing, tracking Gillian Hogg’s movements and sending her messages that were alarming and distressing. The sentencing includes a non-harassment order barring Hogg from approaching or contacting Gillian Hogg for five years
