# The ANC Youth League is calling on government to implement and enforce comprehensive sexual education policies in schools. Spokesperson Zama Khanyase says recent statistics reveal that approximately 365 adolescents give birth daily, including about ten girls under the age of 15. She says this troubling reality demands urgent attention and coordinated action from all sectors of society. She adds that the league remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the well-being and development of South Africa’s youth.
# The Protea Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng has postponed the case of an Eldorado Park police officer accused of murdering his girlfriend, Chesnay Keppler to 26 February for further investigation. Keppler was laid to rest over the weekend, and her family is demanding justice. Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Lizzy Suping says Mandla Buthelezi survived a suicide attempt and has been in custody since leaving the hospital:
# The Road Freight Association has welcomed the publishing of the Transnet Network Statement for the rail network in South Africa. Association CEO Gavin Kelly is encouraging all companies that could become a third-party operator, to study the statement and to engage with the Department of Transport in getting rail operations back to a viable and efficient service. He says there will be many opportunities for road transport:
# Japan’s prime minister Shigeru Ishiba urged the United States to dispel concerns that a decision by president Joe Biden to block Nippon Steel’s takeover of US Steel could impact future investments. Biden’s announcement last week cited a strategic need to protect domestic industry. A US government panel had failed to reach consensus on whether acquisition threatened national security, shifting the decision to Biden in the final days of his presidency. Ishiba says Biden’s decision had sparked worries over future Japanese investments in the world’s largest economy.
# Cricket: Star leg spinner Rashid Khan took his seventh wicket of the innings as Afghanistan speedily wrapped up a 72-run victory over Zimbabwe today to win the two-Test series. Zimbabwe were 205-8 overnight with captain Craig Ervine unbeaten on 53. The hosts needed 73 more runs to win the Test at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo after a drawn first Test. But they failed to add a run and Afghanistan needed just 15 deliveries to seal a first Test win since beating Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi four years ago.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-58-cents and the euro at 19-rand-30-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-24-cents and Bitcoin trades at 99-thousand-23-dollars.
