# Syria’s new leaders announced education curriculum changes, that activists denounced as “extremist” and potentially harmful to religious minorities. The amendments were announced a little under a month since forces led by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad. The changes include scrapping poetry relating to women and love and interpreting a Quranic verse about those who had angered God and strayed as referring to “Jews and Christians”. The national anthem has also been removed from textbooks, with the ministry describing it as the Assad regime’s anthem.
# Cricket: Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc sliced through an Indian batting line-up missing Rohit Sharma to put Australia in a commanding position after day one of the fifth and final Test. The visitors were all out for 185 after Jasprit Bumrah, captaining the side, sent his team in at a sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground. Boland was the chief destroyer with 4 for 31 while Starc took 3 for 49. In reply, Australia lost Usman Khawaja for two on the last ball before stumps with Bumrah doing the damage, leaving them at 9 for 1.

Anyone who lights up outside since the beginning of the year faces fines of up to four-thousand-600-rand. The country’s Health Department says the move marks the toughest smoking ban in Italy, where nearly a quarter of the population smokes. The only exception is when people are in isolated places at least ten metres from other people. The ban does not include vapes or electronic cigarettes.
