# Tennis: Iga Swiatek romps to victory but Stefanos Tsitsipas fails at the United Cup in Australia
# And, an A-I powered smart cow will help ranchers
# The court case of a 42-year-old police sergeant from Eldorado Park in Gauteng, accused of killing his 22-year-old girlfriend, Chesnay Keppler, with his service pistol, has been postponed to next month. The accused allegedly fired several shots at Keppler through a window after a domestic dispute, before fleeing the scene. Spokesperson Phaladi Shuping says he is expected to appear in court early next month:
# Agricultural organisation TLU SA says the current circumstances in Mozambique are detrimental to the entire region and will inevitably lead to worsening socio-economic conditions. Spokesperson Bennie van Zyl says the port of Maputo has, over time, developed into the most efficient export hub for South African agricultural products. He says the current unrest has rendered that advantage irrelevant, and they can only hope that stability will be restored swiftly:
# US president Joe Biden has paid tribute to former president Jimmy Carter, who passed away yesterday aged 100. Biden praised him as an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian. Addressing the country, Biden said that Carter lived a life measured not by words, but by deeds. He said that despite serving only one term, his impact on the country remains significant:
# Tennis: Iga Swiatek romped to an emphatic victory in her season-opening match at the United Cup in Australia, but Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed as Kazakhstan upset Greece to make the knockout round of the mixed-team tournament. Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek was on court for the first time since serving a one-month ban for a doping violation. The Pole quickly shook off any nerves in Sydney with a 6-1, 6-love thrashing of Norway’s Malene Helgo. After a mediocre 2024, Tsitsipas was stunned 6-4, 7-6 by 78th-ranked Alexander Shevchenko.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-74-cents and the euro at 19-rand-57-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-61-cents and Bitcoin trades at 93-thousand-408-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-613-dollars-32-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-61-cents a barrel.
# And, finally: Researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia are working on the world’s first smart cow. They believe the artificial intelligence-powered robot will help cattle farmers keep their fields green and their herds healthy. Although distinctly robot-like in appearance, researchers say once the cattle are used to the robot, they will start following it around. The robot offers ranchers access to precision farming and can identify pastures where cattle will get optimum nutrition. The robot can monitor herd characteristics but also the health of individual animals.
