# And a toddler nearly runs off a cliff at a Hawaiian volcano
# Government says recent developments have seen a number of illegal miners, known as zama zamas, voluntarily emerging from the disused mine shafts in Stilfontein, North West. Natjoints spokesperson Tebello Mosikili says this trend indicates that these people have the capability to exit the underground tunnels independently. She says their delayed emergence appears to be a tactic to evade arrest:
# The DA in the Western Cape has strongly condemned the alleged racist incident that recently took place on a local FlySafair flight. The party’s Tertuis Simmers says during the heated altercation, a passenger reportedly hurled racial remarks against a member of the coloured community. He says the DA will be laying a charge of crimen injuria at Bishop Lavis police station today against the FlySafair passenger:
# Former Manchester City soccer player Mikheil Kavelashvili has been sworn in as the president of Georgia. He was a striker for Manchester City between 1996 and 1997. The outgoing pro-Western president Salome Zourabichvili has insisted she is still the legitimate office holder and does not recognise her opponent’s appointment. It comes in the wake of contested general election results, which were mired in allegations of corruption and fraud. Kavelashvili is backed by Georgia’s ruling Dream Party and has strong anti-Western, often conspiratorial views. The presidency is a largely ceremonial position.
# Cricket: Australia took a 2-1 lead in the five-match Test series against India when they won the penultimate match in Melbourne by 184 runs. India lost its final seven wickets for just 34 runs on the final afternoon at the MCG. Captain Pat Cummins and Scott Boland both took three wickets, while Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 84 was the visitors’ best score. India now has to win the final Test, starting at the SCG in Sydney on Friday, to level the series and retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-77-cents and the euro at 19-rand-54-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 93-thousand-633-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-614-dollars-57-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-57-cents a barrel.
# And finally: A Hawaiian national park has issued a warning to tourists after a toddler nearly fell into an erupting volcano. The little boy wandered off from his family and ran straight toward the 120-metre cliff edge of the Kilauea volcano. His mother managed to grab him when he was within centimetres from a fatal fall. Kilauea, on Hawaii’s Big Island, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It routinely erupts, and the latest eruption began a week ago.
