# And tennis: Novak Djokovic asks for more transparency around doping suspensions
# Cosatu supports government’s interventions to mediate and offer advice to the Mozambican government and people. Spokesperson Matthew Parks says the federation is confident that the matter will be resolved, and urges all aggrieved parties to seek a peaceful and calm resolution. He says the two nations cannot afford the destabilisation that will result from further violence, loss of life and economic disruption:
# The Garden Route District Municipality in the Southern Cape says firefighters managed to contain a wildfire at Jongensfontein. Spokesperson Herman Pieters says crews made excellent progress in flushing perimeter lines, with no significant hotspots remaining. He says these areas may still produce smoke due to wind and heat. He adds that in Swartberg Pass and near De Kombuys and the Koos Raubenheimer Dam, fires continues to exhibit active lines in inaccessible mountainous areas:
# An American World War Two veteran who was the oldest living survivor of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii died at the age of 105. Warren “Red” Upton passed away at a hospital in Los Gatos, California, after suffering a bout of pneumonia. A veteran’s organisation for Pearl Harbor survivors told CNN Upton was a humble, gentle, and soft-spoken man. He was also the last surviving crew member of the battleship USS Utah, one of the seven ships sunk during the attack on 7 December.
# Tennis: Twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic wants more transparency around doping suspensions, suggesting double standards. The Serbian agrees with Australian player Nick Kyrgios, who said earlier integrity in the sport was awful. This followed after high-ranking players Jannik Sinner of Italy and Iga Swiatek of Poland received very lenient sanctions for violations this year, while Simona Halep of Romania was banned for nine months earlier. Djokovic says players had been kept in the dark throughout the respective processes.

Gold sells at two-thousand-619-dollars-81-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-60-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, has urged child safety at beaches across the metro. The city anticipates thousands of people to flock to the beaches for New Year’s celebrations, and parents are advised to prioritise the safety of their children. Van der Ross revealed that 169 children have gone missing during the festive period. She told SABC News the department’s Identikidz programme has helped to reunite them with their parents:
