# Basic Education minister, Siviwe Gwarube, has given the assurance that the implementation of the BELA Act will benefit all learners. Addressing the media, Gwarube emphasised the importance of clear guidelines, norms, and standards. Gwarube promises to move swiftly while acknowledging the time needed for effective execution. She said that the guidelines for public schools and provincial departments will be sent by January:
# The National Energy Regulator of South Africa is reviewing Eskom’s controversial Sixth Multi-Year Price Determination Revenue Application. Spokesperson Charles Hlebela says a final decision is expected early next year, following extended public hearings and additional clarifications. He emphasised NERSA’s commitment to ensure a balanced and informed outcome:
# Incoming US president Donald Trump slammed what he called unfair fees for US ships passing through the Panama Canal and threatened to demand control of the waterway be returned to Washington. He also hinted at China’s growing influence around the canal. US businesses depend on the channel to move goods between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The Panama Canal, which was completed by the United States in 1914, was returned to the Central American country under a 1977 deal. Panama took full control in 1999.
# Rugby: The Stormers have finally broken their losing streak with a 29-10 home win over the Lions in the United Rugby Championship. After losing their five previous matches, the hosts scored three unconverted tries in the first half to lead 15-0 at the break. The Stormers dominated territory and possession but still struggled to take control of the match as they could not turn that into points. A red card for Lions lock Ruben Schoeman in the 21st minute also sealed his team’s fate. The Stormers face the Sharks at home on Saturday.
# And, US president-elect Donald Trump announced he has appointed television executive Mark Burnett, who produced the tycoon’s reality show “The Apprentice,” as special envoy to the United Kingdom. The Emmy Award-winning Burnett, who was born in London, is the creator of “Survivor”. He has also produced other hit shows including “Shark Tank” and “The Voice.” His biggest success was with “The Apprentice”. The show was widely credited with reversing Trump’s fortunes and making him a household name in the United States before he announced his presidential run in 2015.
