# President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address for the National Day of Reconciliation today in Vredendal, Western Cape. This year’s theme, ‘Healing Historical Wounds and Forging New Futures’, highlights reconciliation, unity, and social cohesion. Established in 1995, the holiday fosters racial harmony and commemorates South Africa’s democratic journey. The Presidency says that the event will feature historical reflections, veterans’ recognition, and a focus on healing and nation-building.
# The Presidency has expressed concern over McKinsey’s appointment to the business engagement group that meets to coordinate the participation of business in the G20, and Bain’s role in South Africa’s Energy Council Project Management Office. Highlighting their past involvement in state capture, the Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya states that these appointments undermine public trust and good governance. Magwenya emphasised the need for more credible partners:
# Police in Mauritius have issued an order for the arrest of the Indian Ocean islands’ former central bank governor, Harvesh Seegolam in connection with an inquiry into a conspiracy to defraud case. The action, by the police anti-money laundering unit, is the first significant one from the government of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, who said the outgoing government had falsified the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), budget deficit and public debt figures for years. Police said Seegolam, was out of the country and would be arrested as soon as he returned.
# Golf: South African Shaun Norris pipped fellow countryman Ryan van Velzen to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship title at Leopard Creek Country Club in Mpumlanga yesterday. Heading into the final round six strokes behind overnight leader Marcus Kinhult, Norris sensationally carded a 5-under 67 to post 13-under and win by one stroke. Norris, who won his seventh Japan Golf Tour title earlier this month, picked up his second DP World Tour title after his Steyn City Championship win in 2022.
# And, finally: Four white rhinos have died after drinking from the polluted Lake Chivero in Zimbabwe. According to Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, several other animals, including zebra and wildebeest, were also poisoned by cyanobacteria from the polluted water. ZimParks has since relocated remaining rhinos to prevent further deaths. ZimParks says pollution from raw sewage continues to affect the lake, with authorities struggling to protect wildlife despite clean water points.
