# South African pop sensation Tyla triumphed at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, winning Top Afrobeats Song and Top Afrobeats Artist. She had been nominated eight times in six categories including Top R-and-B Artist and Top R-and-B Female Artist. Known for representing amapiano, Tyla also won accolades at the SAMAs, Grammys, BET, and MTV EMAs. She thanked her fans for their support:
# The 12th African Emerging Filmmakers Awards nominees have been announced, with Baby Cele nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Ukhumbuzile. The awards, celebrating emerging South African talent, will be held in Durban tomorrow. Highlighting improved industry standards, founder Andile Buwa praised the event’s role in showcasing quality films and fostering local storytelling under the theme We Are Kings and Queens – Reviving Ubuntu.
# The Addams Family Musical takes the stage at the Homecoming Centre, formerly The Fugard, in Cape Town from tomorrow. The production is a tale of unlikely connections as the dark and mysterious Wednesday Addams falls for a boy from an ordinary family, Lucas Beineke. As their two worlds collide, the show explores themes of love, vulnerability, and the importance of family bonds. The show is directed by Garth Tavares and stars Samantha Peo and Tiaan Rautenbach.
# The Johnson-Rose Cancer Foundation is making an impact in the lives of uninsured cancer patients in South Africa through a 100-rand monthly donation initiative. The foundation offers vital support, including treatment funding, transport, and ancillary services. The foundation says this critical care is essential especially during this festive season as some families deal with the anxiety of cancer diagnoses. The foundation says it seeks to make a difference and change the lives of patients through monthly donations.
# And finally: Eighteen-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju has made history by becoming the youngest-ever undisputed classical chess world champion. The Indian teenager beat China’s Ding Liren in the final in Singapore. He takes over the title of youngest champion from Russia’s Gary Kasparov, who was 22 when he won nearly four decades ago. Gukesh says winning is the best moment of his life:
