# The governing body of the Pretoria High School for Girls has taken the Gauteng Education Department to the local High Court, challenging the investigations into claims of racism. The body argues the probe was unlawful, seeking to halt the recommendations and access the full report. The department defends the investigation, citing statutory authority and insisting dissatisfaction does not equate to unlawfulness. The controversy includes allegations of micro-aggressions and disciplinary hearings.
Meanwhile, education activist, Hendrick Makaneta says corruption undermines the management of resources in the education sector, and the very future of learners. He says to build a society rooted in transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership, the inclusion of anti-corruption and whistleblowing education in schools nationwide is needed. Makaneta says the fight against corruption must begin with education:
# Government is urging all spaza shop owners and food-handling facilities to register their businesses in municipalities where they operate before Friday’s deadline. This comes after the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs declared a national disaster following an increase in food-borne illnesses linked to spaza shops. # The South African Reserve Bank says climate change poses economic and social risks that can affect the workings of the financial system. Deputy governor, Fundi Tshazibana, says central banks have a responsibility to ensure that financial systems can survive and manage climate-related shocks. Tshazibana says the bank is working to ensure that financial institutions and markets consider climate-related risks in their operations. She says they also seek to understand the effects of climate change on inflation and financial stability and take action against these risks.
# Cricket: New Zealand opener Devon Conway won’t play in the third Test against England in Hamilton, but will stay at home for the birth of his first child. Struggling Conway could only score a combined 21 runs in the first two Tests which the Black Caps lost by eight wickets and 323 runs, respectively. He contributed one-thousand-815 runs in his 25 Tests since 2021. Conway will be replaced by uncapped all-rounder Mark Chapman, who impressed in domestic cricket recently. The third Test gets underway on Saturday.
