Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 4 December 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# A 4.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Springbok in the Namakwa District Municipality in the Northern Cape late last night. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported the quake at a depth of ten kilometres. Seismologists are reviewing data, as reports from other agencies emerge. No immediate damage or injuries have been reported.
# Mpumalanga is leading a climate-smart farming initiative in an effort to combat the impact of climate change on agriculture. It focuses on using technology to promote sustainable farming practices. These include training farmers on digital tools to help anticipate climate-related risks, ensuring food security, and fostering collaboration with government and municipalities. Experts say extreme heat is making land less suitable for crops and posing a major threat to livestock.
# And finally: Today is World Wildlife Conservation Day, dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action for the protection and preservation of wildlife. Currently, there are more than 166-thousand species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list, with more than 46-thousand-300 species threatened with extinction. Javan rhinos are the most critically endangered species. People are encouraged not to buy illegal wildlife products, such as ivory, educate themself on wildlife crime and endangered species, and donate to a conservation group or wildlife organisation.
