# The MK Party’s Mazwanele Manyi dismisses the EFF’s threat to attach Nkandla
# The ANC is to table a motion on president Cyril Ramaphosa’s salary increase
# And athletics: Letsile Tebogo and Sifan Hassan are named the world athletes of the year
# MK Party member of parliament, Mzwanele Manyi, has dismissed EFF leader Julius Malema’s legal threats to seize former president Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home over unpaid legal fees. The dispute follows tensions between the EFF and MK Party after several former EFF members joined MK. Manyi states that Zuma’s property is under the Ingonyama Trust and cannot be attached:
# The ANC will present a motion in the National Assembly to debate president Cyril Ramaphosa’s salary adjustment next week. Ramaphosa, whose salary remains 4.2-million-rand annually, has not received an increase since assuming office in 2018. ANC deputy chief whip, Doris Dlakude, confirmed the motion, aligning with recommendations from the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers. The National Assembly will also consider a 2.5-percent salary hike for judges.
# South African Democratic Teachers Union general secretary Mugwena Maluleke has announced plans for a protest to demand the implementation of Section 4 and 5 of the BELA Act. Maluleke condemned opposition to these clauses, describing it as a fight against transformation. Maluleke criticised a recent agreement between Solidarity and Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube, claiming it promotes racism and tribalism. He calls for social cohesion:
# Calls to the National Consumer Commission’s hotline will be free for three months. This allows South Africans to report fake or expired foodstuffs free of charge amid rising concerns over contaminated food linked to child fatalities. The commission says the initiative follows president Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for action on food safety, urging consumers to report suspicious sales and ensure proper food labelling and quality standards.
# Athletics: Olympic champions Letsile Tebogo of Botswana and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands were named male and female athlete of the year at the World Athletics Awards in Monaco. Twenty-one-year-old Tebogo became Botswana’s first Olympic champion when he won the 200-metres in Paris. He also picked up the male track athlete of the year award. American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was named female track athlete of the year. Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis, who broke his own world record in winning pole vault gold, was named male field athlete of the year.
