Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we take a look at rugby news: The Blitzboks have departed for the United Arab Emirates for the weekend’s start of the new world sevens series in Dubai, where they are the defending champions. The team ended the previous season on a high when they claimed bronze in the Paris Olympic Games, but could only finish seventh on the series log. Co-captain Impi Visser says they have clear goals for the season under new coach Philip Snyman, and apart from winning on the field they also want to be good people off the field.
Fifteen-man rugby: Springbok prodigy Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is expected to return from injury for the Stormers in this weekend’s United Rugby Championship match against the Sharks in Durban. He injured his knee during the Rugby Championship and missed out on the Boks’ Northern Hemisphere tour. The Stormers are currently in 13th place on the URC log after winning only two of their five matches so far. The Sharks are in ninth position after three victories out of five outings.
# On to cricket news: Experienced batter Kane Williamson returns for New Zealand for the three Tests against England, starting in Christchurch on Thursday. He missed the recent tour of India with a groin strain. Coach Gary Stead says the former captain will replace one of the batters who helped the Black Caps record a 3-nil series whitewash. He says they are looking forward to have Williamson back with the record he has. The 34-year-old scored eight-thousand-881 runs and took 30 wickets for New Zealand in his 102 Tests since 2010.
And 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the youngest player bought in an Indian Premier League auction after being selected by Rajasthan Royals for 2.4-million-rand. The second day of the auction saw former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis sold to Delhi Capitals for four-million-rand. All-rounder Marco Jansen went to Punjab Kings for 14-million-rand, while Mumbai Indians bought wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton for two-million-rand. South Africa’s teen sensation, Kwena Maphaka, was bought for 3.2-million-rand by Rajasthan Royals.
# And finally, motorsport: Formula One has reached an agreement in principle with US car giant General Motors for its Cadillac brand to join the grid as the eleventh team from 2026. F1 has three races in America each season. General Motors president Mark Reuss says they are committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans worldwide. GM’s entry will raise the number of car manufacturers building engines for F1 to six, in addition to Mercedes, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, and Audi.
