Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Prosecuting Authority says the delays in Jacob Zuma’s trial are not in the interest of justice
# Cosatu says the gender violence-related deficiencies in the criminal justice system must be addressed
# And Charlize Theron is the latest star to join the cast of Christopher Nolan’s new movie
# The National Prosecuting Authority says it would be inimical to the interests of justice for former president Jacob Zuma to again be allowed to delay his already much-delayed corruption trial. Zuma’s lawyers have stated that should he fail in his second campaign to force state prosecutor Bill Downer’s removal, he would again seek to petition the Supreme Court of Appeal. In papers filed in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg, the NPA says the criminal trial can and should proceed in April 2025 with Downer as the lead prosecutor.
# Cosatu says with it being 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, government needs to tackle the shortcomings within the criminal justice system. In South Africa, a woman is killed every three hours; and over 50-percent of women are killed by an intimate partner. Cosatu’s, Zanele Sabela, says the shortcomings in the justice system are well documented by gender-based violence survivors, ranging from the unsavoury treatment of police officials to a lack of sufficient protection from the perpetrators:
# The DA in Gauteng says MEC for Finance, Lebogang Maile, will have to find ways to fund the delivery of quality services with reduced funding. The MEC is set to present the Adjustment Budget for the 2024/2025 financial year today. The DA’s, Dorianne Arendse, says that the provincial government taking responsibility for paying a portion of the e-toll debt, raises serious questions about compromises elsewhere, giving it less to allocate to the delivery of services:
# Cricket: Thirteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the youngest player bought in an Indian Premier League auction after being selected by the Rajasthan Royals for 2.4-million-rand. The second day of the auction on Monday saw former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis sold to Delhi Capitals for four-million-rand. All-rounder Marco Jansen went to the Punjab Kings for 14-million-rand, while the Mumbai Indians bought wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton for two-million-rand. South Africa’s teen sensation Kwena Maphaka was bought for 3.2-million-rand by the Rajasthan Royals.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-8-cents and the euro at 18-rand-95-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 94-thousand-259-dollars-83-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-630-dollars-81-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-32-cents a barrel.
# And finally, Oscar winner Charlize Theron has joined a star-studded cast of Christopher Nolan‘s highly-anticipated upcoming movie. Details about the movie’s storyline have been kept confidential. The South African actor, producer, and philanthropist joins an ensemble cast that already features Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson. Universal and Nolan’s follow-up to their Oscar-winning drama Oppenheimer is projecting a production start date of the middle of next year.
