# We start off with rugby: Springbok forward Pieter-Steph du Toit has been named World Rugby Player of the Year, becoming the first South African to win the award for a second time. He joins New Zealand’s Beauden Barrett as a double winner, with All Black greats Dan Carter and Richie McCaw winning three times each. Coach Rassie Erasmus missed out on the Coach of the Year award, which went to France’s 7s coach, Jérôme Daret. Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu lost out on Breakthrough Player of the Year to New Zealand’s Wallace Sititi.
Seven Springbok players have been named in World Rugby’s men’s 15s Dream Team of the Year. Du Toit is one of four South African forwards in the team. He is joined in the pack by Ox Nché, Malcolm Marx, and Eben Etzebeth. The three Bok backs who made the cut are Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel, and Cheslin Kolbe. Ireland has four players in the team, New Zealand three, and Argentina one.
# Olympic Games: South Africa has officially expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. A feasibility study, guided by the International Olympic Committee, will assess the nation’s readiness. Sports minister Gayton McKenzie is expected to present the findings to cabinet. Meanwhile, the president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, Barry Hendricks, hails the move as a milestone for national unity. The IOC has welcomed the interest, praising the collaborative effort to explore this bold initiative.
# Cricket: England Women defeated South Africa by four wickets in the first T20 at Buffalo Park in East London. The Proteas posted 142 for five in their 20 overs with Nadine de Klerk scoring an unbeaten 29. In reply, Nat Sciver-Brunt scored 59 as the visitors reached the target with four balls to spare. This was England’s first outing since their disastrous T20 World Cup group-stage exit in October. The second T20 will be played in Benoni on Wednesday.
# And finally, tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner guided Italy to a second successive Davis Cup title by beating the Netherlands two-nil in Málaga, Spain. Matteo Berrettini defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2 to hand Italy an early advantage. Twenty-three-year-old Sinner then beat Tallon Griekspoor 7-6, 6-2 to secure the trophy. Italy is the first country to win consecutive Davis Cup titles since the Czech Republic in 2012 and ;13. Sinner says this competition is very special:
