# Business Leadership South Africa CEO, Busiswe Mavuso, says she is confident of Ebrahim Rasool’s ability to repair South Africa’s strained relationship with the US. President Cyril Ramaphosa has reappointed Rasool as the country’s ambassador to America, a post he previously held from 2010 to 2015. America is South Africa’s second-largest trading partner after China. Mavuso says it will take considerable diplomatic skill to find the right balance of interests to ensure that South Africa continues to benefit from the US relationship the way it now does.
# The DA has urged Transport minister Barbara Creecy to urgently address ongoing Air Traffic Navigation Services failures causing major flight disruptions. According to the party, the recent disruptions at several airports, including East London, Mthatha, George, and Kimberley, have led to flight cancellations, safety risks and financial losses. The DA’s Chris Hunsinger warns that unresolved issues could harm the tourism industry as the peak holiday season approaches:
# Police have confirmed that 14 illegal miners resurfaced from shaft ten of the old Buffelsfontein gold mine in Stilfontein, North West, last night, as Operation Vala Umgodi enters another week. They are all from Mozambique. Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, says the 14 opted to emerge late at night, assuming law enforcement officials were no longer present. She adds that some immediately ran back upon noticing the police’s presence:
# The United Nations says all girls and women must be permitted to exercise their full human rights in a safe environment without fear of violence or persecution. Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. According to the UN, an estimated 736-million women have been subjected to physical or sexual intimate partner violence. It says this means one woman or girl is killed every ten minutes by their intimate partner or family member. The UN says the solution lies in robust responses and holding perpetrators accountable.
# Rugby: Seven Springbok players have been named in World Rugby’s men’s 15s Dream Team of the Year. World Rugby’s 2024 Player of the Year, Pieter-Steph du Toit, is one of four South African forwards in the team. He is joined in the pack by Ox Nché, Malcolm Marx, and Eben Etzebeth. The three Bok backs who made the cut are Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel, and Cheslin Kolbe. Ireland has four players in the team, New Zealand three, and Argentina one.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-2-cents and the euro at 18-rand-89-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 98-thousand-311-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-666-dollars-3-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-22-cents a barrel.
