Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The ANC confirms the expulsion of former president Jacob Zuma
# Giwusa demands higher wages and economic overhaul to combat inequality
# And athletics: The New Ultimate Championship is described as a gamechanger for track and field
# The ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal upheld the decision of the National Disciplinary Committee to expel Jacob Zuma from the ANC. National spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, says as a former party president Zuma was expected to embody the highest standards of leadership. By establishing and leading a rival political party, he undermined the unity and cohesion of the movement. Bhengu-Motsiri says the decision must serve as a reminder that no individual is greater than the movement, and that the party’s strength lies in its leadership and dedication to the aspirations of the people:
# General industries union Giwusa is demanding higher wages and a major economic overhaul to tackle rising inequality. While welcoming the drop in inflation and the interest rate cut the union says these measures offer little relief to struggling workers. Giwusa’s Koketso Phasha is calling for a liveable minimum wage of 15-thousand-rand, the regulation of food prices, and job creation through public works and agricultural projects:
# A delegation including the Special Investigating Unit has urged for enhanced legislation to safeguard whistleblowers amid South Africa’s observance of International Fraud and Corruption Awareness Week. The initiative promotes anti-fraud education worldwide. Addressing the delegation at UNISA, the Southern African Institute of Government Auditors’ Kgothatso Maoko, emphasised greater efforts are needed to combat fraud effectively and protect those exposing corruption:
# The car park at Iceland’s world-famous Blue Lagoon has been engulfed in lava, after a nearby volcano erupted for the seventh time in less than a year. Hotel guests and nearby homes were evacuated but authorities said there was no threat to air travel in the region. Prior to 2021 the Reykjanes Peninsula had not seen volcanic activity in 800 years. Seismologists say a long-dormant fault line lying under the landscape, has reawakened. Meteorologists said the latest eruption was smaller than the previous one in August.
# And athletics: The president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, describes the new Ultimate Championship as a gamechanger for track and field. The inaugural team event will be held in the Hungarian capital Budapest in September 2026, and will take place every other year. This is done to fulfil the world body’s ambition of having a global championship every year, and will take place in a year where there isn’t a World Championship. Coe says it will have record-setting prize money of 180-million-rand.
