Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# A pig farmer’s bail application is postponed to February after a gruesome double murder in Limpopo
# Cape Town offers a 100-thousand-rand reward after the killing of a teenager in Elsies River
# And motorsport: Lewis Hamilton sets the pace in Las Vegas ahead of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen
# The bail application of a Limpopo farmer accused of murdering two women and feeding their bodies to pigs, had been postponed to the 18th of February in the Magistrate’s Court in Mankweng. Zachariah Olivier and two other men were arrested after the gruesome discovery in August. The court heard this morning Olivier’s legal representative wasn’t available. The two other accused, farm supervisor Adriaan de Wet and worker William Musora, had previously abandoned their bail applications.
# The City of Cape Town is offering a reward of up to 100-thousand-rand for any information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the murder of a 14-year-old boy in Elsies River. Grantham van Reenen was fatally wounded when suspected gang members opened fire while he and his two friends were walking to school earlier this week. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says Grantham was not involved with gangs:
# The GOOD Party says a thoughtful and sustainable response to the foodborne illness outbreak is needed, and not a reactionary knee-jerking like the registration of spaza shops within 21 days. Over 800 food poisoning cases have been recorded across the country with at least 23 deaths. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says while the government’s intentions may be good, it has opened up a Pandora’s box of chaos:
# British Home secretary Yvette Cooper says the West should expect continued aggressive language from Russian president Vladimir Putin. She told Sky News the West needs to stand up to Putin. Britain and America this week agreed to allow Ukraine to use their long-range weapons on Russian territory, sparking anger and threats of retaliation from the Kremlin. Putin says he could attack military facilities in countries that have allowed Kyiv to use their missiles to strike Russia. Attacking British or American military facilities would be a major escalation of the war.
# Motorsport: Lewis Hamilton topped the times ahead of Lando Norris as three-time champion Max Verstappen struggled for grip in a late-night free practice session for this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix. Norris is bidding to keep his faint title challenge alive but Verstappen, aiming to clinch his fourth consecutive drivers’ world title, made little impression in a cold and somewhat desultory session. He finished the session more than two seconds adrift of the pace. Verstappen leads Norris by 62 points with three Grands Prix remaining.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-7-cents and the euro at 18-rand-79-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-58-cents and Bitcoin trades at 98-thousand-657-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-708-dollars-17-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-13-cents a barrel.
