# Two Nelson Mandela University students shone at the International Conference on Advanced Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology in Rome, Italy. The conference brought together leading researchers from around the world to showcase groundbreaking advancements in the field of nanoscience. Zenande Pali won the Best Poster Presentation Award, while Itumeleng Zosela served as a moderator facilitating discussions. The university says the students’ accomplishments highlight the excellence and global impact of the institution’s research in nanomedicine.
# The University of Pretoria says its Javett Art Centre has taken a pioneering step towards inclusivity with its latest exhibition, We, The Purple. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visually impaired visitors to experience art and history through touch. The university says the artworks offer a unique, non-visual way to engage with the socio-political history of South Africa from the 1950s to the 1980s. Blind SA CEO, Jace Nair, says it is initiatives like these that help break down barriers and promote inclusivity in the arts.
# Excitement is building for the Toy Run Cape Town, the longest-running motorcycle-based charity event in the world, at the Killarney International Raceway on Sunday. The event brings together the motorcycling community and the public at large to support and donate toys, gifts and funds to children in safe homes, hospitals, or orphanages. There will be bike and car displays, a beer garden, and a variety of food vendors. The actual toy run will start from two venues GrandWest and Athlone Stadium, and end at Killarney.
# Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, Green Day, and Post Malone will headline the 2025 Coachella festival at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California in April. This is Lady Gaga’s second time as a headliner at the festival, following her appearance in 2017, while it’s the first time for Scott, Malone, and Green Day. South Africa’s Tyla will also perform after pulling out last year due to an injury. The lineup also includes Missy Elliot, Megan Thee Stallion, Charli XCX, Anitta, Benson Boone, and Shaboozey.
# And finally: Artist Maurizio Cattelan’s viral creation titled Comedian, which is composed of a single banana taped to a wall, has sold for over eleven-billion-rand at an auction in New York. Chinese collector and founder of a cryptocurrency platform, Justin Sun, acquired the work. Sun will receive a roll of duct tape and one banana, as well as a certificate of authenticity and official instructions for installing the work. Sotheby’s, David Galperin, has described Comedian as a defiant work of pure genius:
