# The GOOD Party says the cooling of inflation is a welcome relief
# The Parliament’s Police committee is concerned about the SAPS
# And the Southern African Development Community is concerned about Mozambique
# The GOOD Party welcomes the cooling of inflation, saying this brings some relief to all South Africans. Consumer inflation dropped to 2.8-percent in October, the lowest level since June 2020. This marks a significant decrease from the 3.8-percent in September, driven primarily by a sharp month-on-month decline in fuel prices. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says citizens urgently need an economy that will create long-term jobs, and meaningfully address the high levels of inequality and poverty:
# Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police is concerned about the South African Police Service’s recruitment and retention strategy, and slow efforts to improve infrastructure issues at police stations. Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu and the SAPS leadership briefed the committee yesterday, where they revealed that five-thousand-300 police officials leave the service annually. Committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, says having enough boots on the ground and other resources to match the country’s crime trends is crucial.
# ActionSA Gauteng Youth Forum demands transparency and accountability from municipalities in issuing permits to spaza shop owners and vendors. President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed spaza shops and vendors to register their businesses within 21 days, a move aimed at addressing the deadly foodborne illness outbreak in the country. ActionSA’s, Mologadi Modiba, says all applications made within the 21-day timeframe and beyond must be made public for scrutiny:
# The Southern African Development Community has expressed concern about the deadly post-election violence in Mozambique. Demonstrations started last month in the capital, Maputo, after Daniel Chapo was officially declared the winner. Opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane went into hiding before the results were announced, citing fears for his safety. This is after his aide and lawyer were killed as they were preparing to challenge the results. SADC’s, Elias Magosi, says they are committed to working with Mozambique in ensuring peace and security:
# Tennis: Italy won their fifth Billie Jean King Cup title, and first since 2013, by beating 2002 champions Slovakia two-nil in Malaga, Spain. Lucia Bronzetti got Italy off the mark with a, 6-2, 6-4, win over Viktoria Hruncakova in the opening match of the final tie. World number four Jasmine Paolini secured the victory after defeating Rebecca Sramkova, 6-2, 6-1. Paolini, who has enjoyed a breakthrough 2024 season, says winning the trophy is unbelievable:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-10-cents and the euro at 19-rand-10-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-91-cents and Bitcoin trades at 96-thousand-633-dollars-5-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-657-dollars-23-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-75-cents a barrel.
