# President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa undertakes to advance the work of the G20, towards achieving greater global economic growth and sustainable development. He participated in the handover ceremony of the G20 Presidency from Brazil to South Africa in Rio de Janeiro. The G20 is made up of 19 countries and two bodies: the African Union and the European Union. Ramaphosa says South Africa’s G20 Presidency will advance three high-level priorities, inclusive economic growth and inequality, food security, and Artificial Intelligence:
# The Gauteng Department of Education says a circular of Incidents of Food Poisoning, which serves as a guiding framework for schools, vendors, and communities regarding food sales has been issued. The province has recorded over 400 food poisoning cases with 23 deaths. The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, says tuck shops, vendors and traders may proceed to operate on school premises only if they comply with specific requirements and regulations:
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has called for urgent action from the government and police to tackle the growing violence in Cape Town’s high-risk areas. The plea follows the tragic shooting of a 14-year-old grade eight learner from Ravensmead High School in Elsies River. The shooting also left at least two others injured. Makaneta called for stronger measures to protect learners from the violence affecting their communities:
# The Human Rights Watch has criticised the sentencing of 45 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong for conspiring to commit subversion, after the city’s largest national security trial. On Tuesday, a court handed down sentences, ranging from four years to ten years, to activists, former legislators, councillors and academics, who were involved in a plan to pick opposition candidates for local elections. Human Rights Watch says the sentences reflect just how fast Hong Kong’s civil liberties and judicial independence have nosedived in the past four years.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana defeated South Sudan three-nil in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Cape Town Stadium. Goals from Iqraam Rayners, Patrick Maswanganyi and Teboho Mokoena, saw South Africa top Group K ahead of fellow qualifiers Uganda. Bafana Bafana, who have now extended their unbeaten run to 16 games under coach Hugo Broos, will be one of the seeded teams going into the Afcon competition in Morocco next year.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-4-cents and the euro at 19-rand-12-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-89-cents and Bitcoin trades at 91-thousand-994-dollar Gold sells at two-thousand-639-dollars-56-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-96-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The mausoleum where the scant remains of Democratic Republic of Congo’s fiery independence hero Patrice Lumumba are interred, has been vandalised. A tooth was all that was left of the anti-colonialist icon and first prime minister’s remains after the country gained independence from Belgium in 1960. Culture minister Yolande Elebe was unable to confirm whether the tooth, considered a relic, had been stolen. The tooth was returned by Belgium in 2022 and interred during a solemn ceremony attended by president Felix Tshisekedi.
