Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The State Attorney says Zuma’s claims over his legal fees are baseless
# Russia vetoes a UN ceasefire resolution for Sudan
# And rugby: The Springbok assistant coach says they won’t underestimate Wales
# State Attorney Isaac Chowe says former president Jacob Zuma’s claim that his late corruption trial advocate Kemp J Kemp was liable for his 28.9-million-rand legal bill is baseless and has no legal foundation. In 2021, the Supreme Court of Appeal confirmed Zuma was not entitled to continued state funding of his trial defence costs, and ordered the State Attorney to recover the funds. Chowe says in court papers there is no order that legal representatives must repay the monies paid to them.
# Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, says government will take action against people renting spaza shops to undocumented foreigners. President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered the re-registration of all spaza shops within 21 days, in a bid to address the deadly food-borne illness outbreak. Since September, 890 incidents of food-borne illnesses have been reported nationwide, with 23 deaths. Ndabeni-Abrahams told Newzroom Afrika the Immigration Act is very clear on the role of South Africans:
Meanwhile City of Johannesburg council speaker Nobuhle Mthembu welcomes the recent government interventions to address food-borne illnesses. Mthembu says there is an urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement. She adds that addressing the root causes of the problem, such as border control and enforcement of bylaws, is essential for long-term solutions.
# Russia vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan. The country continues to grapple with a deadly war that has displaced more than eleven million people and spurred a humanitarian crisis. China, Russia’s ally, supported the resolution, drafted by the UK and Sierra Leone. British Foreign minister David Lammy says Russia has once again shown to the world its true colours:
# Rugby: Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids says they will not underestimate Wales in their final Outgoing Tour match in Cardiff on Saturday. The Welshmen, who made the World Cup quarterfinals just over a year ago, are seeking to end their eleven-Test match losing run, while the Boks will be hunting for their third successive victory. Davids says they still need to be at their best, regardless of Wales’ previous results:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-94-cents and the euro at 18-rand-99-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-74-cents and Bitcoin trades at 91-thousand-984-dollars-8-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-626-dollars-32-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-39-cents a barrel.
