# Eskom says diesel savings have reached more than 15-billion-rand year-on-year
# And boxing: Mike Tyson lost his heavyweight return fight against Jake Paul
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says local municipalities will be required to take urgent action to address the problem of rat infestations by cleaning cities and towns, and removing waste. All municipal landfill sites will have to comply with the National Environmental Management Waste Act. Ramaphosa says failure to comply will result in strict sanctions that include directives, compliance notices and criminal enforcement:
# Eskom says it continues to realise efficiencies from the investments made in the Generation Recovery Plan that have contributed to South Africa’s energy security and a structural improvement in the coal-fired fleet. Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says the plan has resulted in year-on-year diesel savings of 15.16-billion-rand, almost 70-percent less than the 21.69-billion-rand spent during the same period last year:
# The City of Cape Town has confirmed baboon ranger services will be provided throughout the festive season, from the first of next month. NCC Environmental Services will monitor baboon activity and prevent them from entering urban areas. Due to limited funding, fewer rangers will be on duty, so residents and businesses are urged to practice responsible waste management and stay vigilant. The city is also exploring longer-term solutions for managing urban baboon populations.
# New York is set to become the first city in the US to implement a congestion charge. Governor Kathy Hochul announced pricing on certain roads would begin on 5 January to unclog streets, reduce pollution and deliver better public transit for millions of New Yorkers. Hochul’s plan will take effect before one of its highest-profile critics, Donald Trump, is sworn in as US president in January. Local Republicans have already asked him to intervene. Hochul earlier said she planned to move ahead with the plan regardless of who was in power in Washington.
# And boxing: Mike Tyson’s controversial return to boxing ended in a one-sided defeat, with Jake Paul cruising to victory by unanimous decision against the heavyweight icon in Texas. Tyson looked every bit of his 58 years, managing to land only a handful of meaningful punches during the fight. Paul, who is Tyson’s junior by more than 20 years, used his superior speed and movement to dominate the ageing Tyson with ease. However, he was unable to land the knockout blow he had promised to deliver. Afterwards Tyson hinted that he will be back.
