# The Smile Foundation is set to host its annual movie night at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in Gauteng at the end of this month. Disney Pixar’s Inside Out will be screened, offering families a magical night under the stars while supporting a worthy cause. Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting cleft lip and palate surgeries for children. Tickets for adults are 100-rand, 50-rand for children and it’s free for children under the age of three years old.
# The much-anticipated 2024 edition of the BODY MOVES International Inclusive Dance Festival is coming to Gauteng and the Western Cape later this month and into December. This year’s festival breaks new ground with an exciting collaboration between South Africa and the UK, featuring Mark Smith Productions and Very Easy Productions. The festival will feature the UK’s renowned deaf dancer and choreographer, Mark Smith, and Bells and Sirens 2 choreographed by Thapelo Kotlolo and performed by Jabu Vilakazi and Keaoleboga Seodigeng.
# Nelson Mandela University’s Biochemistry and Microbiology postgraduate student team won the best beer label design category at the annual national Intervarsity Brewing and Tasting Challenge. The winning label was for their beer named Tide Rider and their company, Tides Brewing. The team walked away with ten-thousand-rand. The university says the competition serves as a platform for academic networking and to connect graduates interested in pursuing a career in brewing with industry partners, such as South African Breweries.
# Yale University plans to introduce a course titled, Beyoncé Makes History: Black Radical Tradition History, Culture, Theory and Politics through Music. The course will focus on the 32-time Grammy winner’s work from her self-titled album in 2013 to her current album, Cowboy Carter. It will be taught by the African American studies and music professor Daphne Brooks. Universities across the US have also offered classes on Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Harrison Ford.
# And finally: A malnourished emperor penguin has been found in Australia for the first time, more than three-thousand-500 kilometres north of the Antarctic coast. The adult male dubbed Gus was discovered on a tourist beach in the town of Denmark in southwest Australia. The emperor is the largest penguin species. According to Belinda Cannell from the University of Western Australia, the species has never been reported in the country before. Gus is being cared for by a seabird rehabilitator until his future is determined.
