Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we take a look at rugby: Springbok Sevens coach Philip Snyman says he is looking to build squad depth heading into the upcoming World Sevens Series campaign. The Blitzboks will be without captain Selvyn Davids and Tiaan Pretorius for at least the first two tournaments in Dubai and Cape Town due to injury. Rosko Specman has stepped away from the sevens programme, while Justin Geduld has moved into the Stormers set-up. Snyman says they have several strong and experienced leaders in the squad:
Meanwhile, former captain Sam Cane and winger Mark Tele’a won’t play for the All Blacks in Saturday’s Test against France in Paris. The flanker sustained a deep head cut during last weekend’s victory over Ireland and it is feared this could be the end of his career as he plans to retire after the tour. Tele’a injured his hand, while lock Sam Darry already returned home with a season-ending knee injury. Du’Plessis Kirifi, Chay Fihaki and Fabian Holland were called up to the squad.
# Cricket: Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka and Seshnie Naidu won’t feature for the Proteas Women in the T20 series against England, starting on the 24th. Kapp and Khaka get rested while Naidu is writing matric exams. Management has recalled medium-pacer Eliz-Mari Marx and allrounder Nondumiso Shangase. Captain Laura Wolvaardt, Nadine de Klerk and Chloé Tryon will return from the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia in time for the three-match series, which will be followed by three one-day games and a one-off Test.
More cricket news: Pakistan has confirmed India won’t participate in the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy tournament, taking place in the country in February and March. This will be the first time Pakistan will host an international tournament in almost 30-years. India’s decision is ascribed to ongoing political tensions between the two neighbouring countries. The ICC is yet to comment on the announcement. The tournament features the host and the seven highest-ranked teams from last year’s World Cup group stage in a 50-over format.
# And finally, soccer: English Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect. This follows a video appearing to show him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp. The video appears to refer to a match that Coote officiated between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which finished one-all. Klopp criticised Coote after the match, saying the referee failed to give fouls for challenges made on Liverpool’s players. The 42-year-old is one of the Premier League’s most experienced officials.
