# President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the Special Investigating Unit to probe the South African Special Risks Insurance Association over claims and payouts relating to 2021’s civil unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. At the time the claims amounted to just over 28.5-billion-rand. The SIU’s spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says the investigation will seek to establish whether the claims made were in line with applicable legislation or practices of the National Treasury:
# FlySafair has filed an urgent application for an interdict against the South African International Air Services Council ruling, that found the low-cost airline’s shareholding structure was not compliant with the law. Irish company ASL Aviation owns nearly 75-percent of FlySafair’s shares, while South African aviation law limits foreign ownership in domestic airlines to 25-percent. The airline was also found to have failed to apply for an amendment of its air service licence when its ownership structure changed in March 2019. FlySafair has expressed confidence in its compliance with existing regulations.
# The South African National Civic Organisation in KwaZulu-Natal has resolved to immediately cut ties with the ANC, calling the party an arrogant alliance partner. This comes as the ANC provincial leadership faces possible dissolution by the party’s national executive committee next month, in the wake of the party losing KwaZulu-Natal in the May elections. Sanco secretary Sizwe Cele told Newzroom Afrika that the ANC has failed to lead the alliance in the province:
# Fresh riots broke out in one of the suburbs of Amsterdam on Monday, with protesters destroying public infrastructure. The riot in Nieuw-West comes amid a state of emergency in the city, following the violence surrounding the soccer match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv last Thursday. Meanwhile, the Dutch police have made five new arrests in their investigation into last week’s violence. Dutch prime minister Dick Schoof has condemned the incidents as antisemitic attacks.
# Tennis: Sixth seed Casper Ruud stunned Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in their season-ending ATP Finals opening match in Turin, Italy. The Norwegian defeated the Spaniard, 6-1, 7-5, in the John Newcombe Group, to record his 50th victory of the season. Meanwhile, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who is aiming for a third ATP Finals trophy beat Russian Andrey Rublev, 6-4, 6-4. Ruud says this is one of the best wins of the season for him:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-93-cents and the euro at 19-rand-9-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-2-cents and Bitcoin trades at 87-thousand-789-dollars-8-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-622-dollars-94-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-72-cents a barrel.
