BULLETIN 11 November 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA urges government to bolster food safety standards
# Deputy minister Gungubele disagrees with the withdrawal of the SABC Bill
# And South Africa’s Tyla bags three MTV Europe Music Awards
# The DA says the severe shortage of Environmental Health Practitioners coupled with the Department of Health’s inadequate oversight of food safety standards, have contributed to the surge of food poisoning cases in the country. Gauteng alone has recorded over 400 cases with 23 deaths, mostly children. The DA’s Karl le Roux says this crisis is a damning indictment of governance that has allowed health and safety inspections to collapse over the years:
# Communications and Digital Technologies deputy minister Mondli Gungubele is in disagreement with the decision by minister Solly Malatsi to withdraw the SABC Bill from Parliament. The minister argued it did not adequately address the public broadcaster’s funding model and would have given the minister too much power in the appointment of the board. Gungubele, who initially introduced the bill in October last year while he was the minister, contends that withdrawing the bill could further delay efforts to address the SABC’s financial challenges.
# ActionSA in Johannesburg says the axing of the mayoral committee member of Community Development, Kabelo Gwamanda, aligns with its commitment to ethical leadership and accountability. The Al Jama-ah councillor currently has an ongoing court case where he is accused of defrauding people through a funeral policy scam. ActionSA’s Khomo Mashala says Gwamanda’s removal will help restore residents’ confidence and strengthen investor trust:
# Cricket: Captain Jos Buttler hit 83 as England defeated the West Indies by seven wickets in the second T20 in Barbados, to take a two-nil lead in the five-match series. The home side posted 158 for eight in their 20 overs with captain Rovman Powell top-scoring with 43. In reply, Buttler shared a 129-run second-wicket stand with Will Jacks, before Liam Livingstone smashed an unbeaten 23 to see England reach the target with 31 balls to spare. The third T20 will be played at St Lucia on Thursday.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-59-cents and the euro at 18-rand-84-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 80-thousand-862-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-671-dollars-53-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-77-cents a barrel.
# And finally, South Africa’s Tyla won three awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards held in Manchester, England. She won Best R&B, Best Afrobeats, and Best African Artist. Pop superstar Taylor Swift was the big winner, walking away with four awards, namely Best Artist, Best Video for her collaboration with Post Malone on Fortnight, Best Live, and Best US Act. Other winners include Eminem, Ariana Grande, and Raye. Tyla says she was honoured and shocked to have won:
