Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The ANC will discuss policy tensions with the SACP
# The NPA is confident Magudumana’s appeal won’t succeed
# And Trump makes his first key White House appointment
# The ANC has announced plans to engage in dialogue with the South African Communist Party following recent tensions over policy direction. This after SACP general secretary Solly Mapaila publicly criticised ANC leadership including president Cyril Ramaphosa. The party’s secretary general, Fikile Mbalula, says that while the ANC values its alliance with the SACP, it believes differences should be handled internally with respect for their shared history:
# The National Prosecuting Authority says it is confident that even if doctor Nandipha Magudumana approaches the Constitutional Court over her extradition, the appeal would be dismissed. The Supreme Court of Appeal has reserved judgment in the appeal matter by Magudumana to have her arrest in Tanzania declared unlawful. She claims her deportation was a disguised extradition. NPA’s spokesperson, Mthunzi Mhaga, told Newzroom Afrika that Magudumana’s legal team failed to demonstrate convincingly the police played any role in her deportation:
# US president-elect Donald Trump has announced that his campaign manager, Susie Wiles, will serve as his White House Chief of Staff. She will be the first woman to hold the role. A Chief of Staff serves as the president’s confidant and helps balance competing political and policy priorities. Trump says Wiles helped him achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history, and was an integral part of his 2016 and 2020 successful campaigns. He adds that she is tough, smart, innovative, and is universally admired and respected.
# Tennis: Wimbledon champion Czech Barbora Krejcikova defeated American Coco Gauff, 7-5, 6-4, to book her spot in the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Her victory means defending champion Iga Swiatek has been eliminated despite thrashing Russia’s Daria Kasatkina, 6-1, 6-0 in her final group match. Krejcikova will face China’s Qinwen Zheng in the last four, while Gauff meets world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Krejcikova says Zheng will be a tough opponent:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-36-cents and the euro at 18-rand-71-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-51-cents and Bitcoin trades at 75-thousand-841-dollars-8-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-698-dollars-81-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-9-cents a barrel.
# And finally, deputy president Paul Mashatile will attend the inauguration of Botswana’s new president Duma Boko at the National Stadium in Gaborone today. The Botswana Democratic Party, which has ruled the southern African country of 2.3 million people since its independence from Britain in 1966, was ousted in last week’s elections. Boko, who heads the Umbrella for Democratic Change, has an outright majority in Parliament. The presidency says South Africa and Botswana enjoy strong political, economic, and social relations.
