Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# President Ramaphosa stresses the importance of cooperative governance
# NERSA schedules public hearings on the proposed Eskom price hike
# And president Biden has promised an orderly transfer of power
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says inclusive economic growth that creates jobs and improves people’s lives is the government of national unity’s overriding priority. He addressed a meeting between the national executive and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial executive council in eThekwini yesterday. This is part of a new series of interactions between the president and provinces to enhance intergovernmental coordination. Ramaphosa says cooperative governance is mandated by the Constitution:
# The National Energy Regulator of South Africa will hold public hearings on Eskom’s Sixth Multi-Year Price Determination revenue application from 18 November to 4 December. Eskom has requested 446-billion-rand for 2025/26, increasing to 537-billion-rand by 2027/28. In a statement, Nersa says that primary energy costs, operating expenses, and independent power producers drive the proposal. Stakeholders can submit attendance requests by 8 November. NERSA’s final decision is expected on 20 December this year.
# DA spokesperson on Water and Sanitation in Gauteng, Stephen Moore, has expressed alarm over ongoing water outages impacting millions in Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni. Moore says a technical fault at Rand Water’s Palmiet Pump Station exposed Gauteng’s fragile water infrastructure, revealing communities’ vulnerability to disruptions. He urged Rand Water and municipalities to prioritise transparency and infrastructure resilience to prevent future crises.
# US president Joe Biden says the American people deserve a peaceful and orderly transition of power following president-elect Donald Trump’s election victory. He addressed the nation from the Rose Garden of the White House, where he lauded vice president Kamala Harris for her true character following her election loss. The speech comes after Harris conceded the election on Wednesday. Biden says he hopes Trump’s re-election puts to rest doubts about the fairness of US elections:
# Rugby: Ireland’s head coach, Andy Farrell, says Tests against the All Blacks always have an edge and tonight’s clash in Dublin won’t be about seeking revenge for last year’s World Cup quarterfinal loss to New Zealand. He describes the Kiwis as one of the best teams in the world and says that was enough motivation. Ireland, who currently is on top of the world rankings, is aiming for a 20th straight victory at the Aviva Stadium. Farrell says New Zealand is always the team to beat.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-29-cents and the euro at 18-rand-69-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-47-cents and Bitcoin trades at 76-thousand-17-dollar-10-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-705-dollars-83-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-56-cents a barrel.
# And finally: A Kenyan court has dismissed a case challenging the government’s reversal of a ban on genetically modified crops, effectively allowing for their open cultivation. The East African nation lifted a decade-long ban on GM crops in October 2022 but the decision has been the subject of court challenges and protest from consumer and biodiversity groups. Yesterday’s ruling is the second time the High Court has thrown out a case aimed at blocking GM crops.
