BULLETIN 7 November
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The winners of the Earthshot prize awards were announced at a ceremony in Cape Town. The prize, founded by the Prince of Wales, supports sustainable, eco-friendly projects globally. The winners include the Green Africa Youth Organisation, who use behavioural change to help communities clean up waste, and Keep IT Cool, a Kenyan-based company using solar-powered refrigeration to help cut harvest waste for farmers. Prince William says the prize is a collaborative movement for change:
One of the top 100 participants in Africa for the Earthshot Prize Youth Programme, Stellenbosch University student Lesedi Monnanyane, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discuss climate change challenges with William, who awarded the five winners with 23-million-rand each. Monnanyane runs a successful waste, gardening and cleaning business that has created 30 job opportunities, to solve hygiene and waste problem challenges. He says William showed genuine interest in his ideas.
# Western Cape MEC of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Ivan Meyer, says they are expecting another bumper summer tourism season. Twenty-seven airlines will service the Cape Town International Airport during this summer, connecting Cape Town to 31 destinations on 38 routes. Nearly 200-thousand passengers and crew are expected to visit the province’s shores. Meyer says he is optimistic about the tourism season, given efforts by the Department of Home Affairs to make it easier for tourists from high-growth markets, such as China and India, to visit the country.
# The Flatfoot Access Festival in Durban is gearing up to celebrate 21 years of inclusive dance this year. The event highlights work by the Flatfoot Dance Company, empowering dancers with disabilities. This year the festival will host three special guests, dancers from the WACO Dance Movement, multi-award-winning South African dance-maker, Gladys Agulhas, and a digital engagement in a collaboration with Ethiopian dancer Amanuel Solomon. The festival will take place at the Stable Theatre on the 29th and 30th of November.
# And finally: Two Durban designers are currently participating in the 2024 Windhoek Fashion Week happening at Maerua Mall in the Namibian capital until Saturday. The participation of the creative director and owner of DUKE Clothe Your Soul, Sandile Mngadi, and the founder of YATSAR Clothing, Sicelo Dlezi, is funded by the eThekwini Municipality. The pair will be showcasing their work today. Mngadi says he hopes to inspire young, emerging designers from disadvantaged communities.
