# The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has declassified its report on the 2020 murder of Cape Town anti-gang unit detective Charl Kinnear, who was shot outside his Bishop Lavis home. The police watchdog held a briefing today to explain its stance on the report’s release, stating that only those directly involved can access specific investigation details. IPID’s head of legal services, Stephens Ramafoko, says the report was classified in 2022 to protect sensitive information on witnesses and officials linked to the case:
# Cosatu says it condemns the people who saw yesterday’s march against the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act in Pretoria as an opportunity to display old apartheid-era flags. The DA, AfriForum, Solidarity and other organisations marched against the BELA Act. Cosatu’s Zanele Sabela says the Human Rights Commission must launch an investigation and hold the responsible people accountable, as the act is not about race:
# The South African Council for Planners will collaborate with the Royal Town Planning Institute in the United Kingdom on best practices in urban town planning. The two organisations signed an agreement on the second day of the World Urban Forum in Egypt. The council’s Mfaniseni Sihlongonyane says part of the agreement is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise on urban town planning:
# Rugby: Scotland will face the Springboks in Edinburgh on Sunday without winger Darcy Graham, who scored four tries during last weekend’s 57-17 victory over Fiji. He suffered a head injury while scoring the fourth try and coach Gregor Townsend confirmed he will not be available. Kyle Rowe, who impressed for Glasgow Warriors during the recent United Rugby Championship victory over the Stormers, recovered from an injury he sustained against Fiji and could be Graham’s replacement against South Africa.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-66-cents and the euro at 18-rand-99-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-77-cents and Bitcoin trades at 73-thousand-945-dollars-91-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-722-dollars-37-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-53-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Lionsgate has announced that its Michael Jackson biopic titled Michael will hit theatres on the third of October 2025. Starring in the title role is Jaafar Jackson, who is the nephew of the late pop superstar. The biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua also includes Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo. It will include 30 songs and will provide moviegoers with an inside look at the most prolific artist who ever lived.
