# Vote counting has picked up in key US states including Georgia and North Carolina with more results coming in. Former president Donald Trump has won his home state of Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Vice president Kamala Harris has won Illinois, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Connecticut. It’s too early to call the battleground states of Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada, which are seen as pivotal to the candidates’ path to victory.
# South African Communist Party general secretary Solly Mapaila says the government of national unity is in turmoil, and the key parties are too different to cooperate. He addressed the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union’s central executive committee meeting in Boksburg on Tuesday. Mapaila criticised the ANC for failing to rein in the DA’s Helen Zille, saying her constant outbursts prove that the Communist Party’s anti-government of national unity assertions are correct:
# Municipal union Samwu in the Free State has condemned the climate of fear in Matjhabeng Local Municipality following the conviction of mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha for assault. The union calls for Khalipha’s immediate removal from both his roles as councillor and mayor, stressing that the safety of workers should be paramount. Samwu’s provincial secretary, Thabang Tseuoa urges the ANC to swiftly remove him from office, advocating for a leadership that fosters safety and respect for all workers in the community.
# The Border Management Authority has temporarily closed the Lebombo port of entry until further notice following violent protests in Mozambique. The protests started at the end of last month in Maputo after Mozambique’s election results were announced. There was violence at Ressano Garcia, a small area in Maputo province located close to the Lebombo port of entry. The authority’s deputy assistant commissioner, Mmemme Mogotsi, says seven Mozambican police officers had taken refuge with the South African border security:
# Soccer: Former champions Manchester City suffered a four-one defeat to Sporting in the Champions League. Sporting’s Scandinavian superstar Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick as the Portuguese champions moved up to second in the Champions League table. This is City’s heaviest defeat since September 2020. Liverpool beat Bayer Leverkusen four-nil, while AC Milan beat holders Real Madrid three-one. City boss Pep Guardiola says they were not clinical enough:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-76-cents and the euro at 19-rand-12-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-91-cents and Bitcoin trades at 73-thousand-908-dollars-4-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-739-dollars-77-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-6-cents a barrel.
