# The IRR says Gauteng’s water crisis is worsened by corruption and poor governance

# The Institute of Race Relations says Gauteng will likely be compelled to introduce water rationing if it is to evade the absolute catastrophe that is Day Zero. Residents of the province are using about 237 litres of water per person per day, nearly double the average of most cities, with more than 33-percent of water wasted due to leaks. The IRR’s Makone Maja says the vicious cycle of corruption, poor planning and maladministration has once again resulted in the crumbling of water infrastructure:
# The Western Cape High Court has postponed the trial of the accused in the murder of steroid king Brian Wainstein after the murder of one of the accused. Mark Lifman was killed in a parking lot in George. His co-accused, Jerome Booysen and André Naudé, requested a postponement to grieve, which the court granted until this coming Monday. The National Prosecuting Authority says the high-profile case against three alleged underworld figures will not be withdrawn following Lifman’s death.
# US vice president Kamala Harris says she is ready to offer a new generation of leadership in America. The Democratic presidential candidate gave her final remarks at a rally in Pennsylvania. Millions of Americans are set to cast their votes for the country’s next president today. Harris and former president Donald Trump will need at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency. Harris says her campaign has been about the fight for American democracy:
# Soccer: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes their Premier League title defence will be a struggle this season, given the mounting injury list. City face Sporting Lisbon in Portugal this evening, after consecutive defeats to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup and Bournemouth on Saturday, which ended an eleven-month unbeaten run in the Premier League. Guardiola says he knows the standard they have set but is confident they can bounce back.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-47-cents and the euro at 19-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-66-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-857-dollars-49-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-733-dollars-43-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-12-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Prince William began a four-day trip to South Africa by meeting young environmentalists from Africa and Asia and playing rugby with local schoolchildren in Ocean View, Cape Town. The trip centres on his annual environmental sustainability-focused Earthshot Prize ceremony, which will be held in the city tomorrow. Western Cape premier Alan Winde says the awards ceremony being held in the province is massive:
