# President Ramaphosa will meet prince William ahead of the Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony
# Lebogang Maile calls for a state of emergency amid increasing food poisoning cases
# And a judge rules Elon Musk’s daily million-dollar giveaway to voters can continue
# President Cyril Ramaphosa will receive a courtesy call from the Prince of Wales at his official residence in Cape Town today. Prince William is in South Africa to host the fourth annual Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony, set to be held tomorrow. The Earthshot Prize shines a light on the impact of climate change, environmental degradation, and pollution, as well as the creative solutions people and communities across the globe generate. The presidency says Ramaphosa and Prince William will discuss several key issues of mutual interest.
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta says something drastic must be done to address outbreaks of food-borne illnesses that have impacted learners negatively. Suspected food poisoning cases have led to the deaths of children and numerous hospitalisations across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape. Makaneta says it is important that the government ensures that spaza shops maintain food safety standards:
Meanwhile, Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Lebogang Maile, says a state of emergency may need to be declared regarding the issues around spaza shops. A ten-year-old girl died in Alexandra at the weekend, after complaining of chest pains shortly after she allegedly consumed chips from a spaza shop near her home. Last month, six children died in Soweto after sharing a packet of chips they bought from a spaza shop. Maile says they need accountability from the shop owners:
# A Pennsylvania judge has ruled that tech billionaire Elon Musk’s daily one-million-dollar giveaway to voters in swing states can continue. Philadelphia district attorney Larry Krasner called the sweepstakes a scam that violated state election law and asked that it be shut down. The giveaway by Musk’s America PAC ends today, the day of the presidential elections. Since the 19th of October, the Tesla CEO has been giving a one-million-dollar check every day to a voter who has signed his petition supporting free speech and gun rights.
# Rugby: Former All Blacks flanker Liam Barry hopes to build on the Australian Sevens’ fourth place at the Olympic Games in Paris, following his appointment as head coach. He succeeds John Manenti, who resigned in August. Fifty-three-year-old Barry’s father, Kevin, and grandfather, Edward, also played Test rugby for New Zealand. He was assistant coach to the All Blacks Sevens side before moving to High-Performance Sport New Zealand. Barry says he isn’t looking to reinvent the wheel, but rather build on what is already there.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-50-cents and the euro at 19-rand-3-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-67-cents and Bitcoin trades at 68-thousand-358-dollars-3-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-735-dollars-53-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-12-cents a barrel.
