# Eskom has assured that the fire at the Kriel power station in Mpumalanga will not impact power supply. This follows after Unit 6 tripped due to the loss of hydraulic oil to the turbine valves yesterday. The fire was quickly extinguished by the station’s emergency team. No injuries occurred, and other units remain fully operational. Eskom’s Daphne Mokwena highlighted that the current reserves are adequate to meet demand:
Meanwhile, the DA says it uncovered Eskom’s abandoned 840-million-rand Wilge residential project in Mpumalanga, revealing extensive waste of taxpayer money. DA spokesperson Kevin Mileham condemned Eskom for seeking a 40-percent tariff hike while neglecting this crumbling development. He says with additional losses totaling 24-billion-rand last year, the DA demands accountability and transparency from Eskom regarding its financial mismanagement and wasteful spending:
# A Western Cape man was given a life sentence for the murder of a teenager in Klawer in February 2022. Fifty-eight-year-old Daniel Smit pleaded guilty to the murder of 13-year-old Jerobejin van Wyk last week. He admitted to kidnapping the boy after catching him stealing mangoes, and later killing him and trying to hide his body parts. The High Court sitting in nearby Vredendal also sentenced Smit to an additional 33-years for attempted murder, kidnapping, violating a corpse and defeating the ends of justice.
# The South African Police Service arrested 13-thousand-and-20 suspects in Operation Shanela in the past week. Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk says the arrests include two-thousand-and-52 for serious crimes, 140 for murder, 99 firearms were seized and one-thousand-180 rounds of ammunition confiscated. She emphasised the police’s commitment to continue these efforts to combat crime effectively:
# Tennis: The ATP world rankings show several moves this week. Alexander Zverev of Germany has moved to world number two after winning the Paris Masters, surpassing Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Daniil Medvedev of Russia overtook Novak Djokovic of Serbia in fourth position. Jannik Sinner of Italy is already assured of ending the season in top position. American Taylor Fritz is still in sixth. Norwegian Casper Ruud and Australian Alex de Minaur moved up, and Russian Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria slumped.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-53-cents and the euro at 19-rand-12-cents.
