# ANC deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane says the policies governing relations between South Africa and the US do not depend on who takes over the White House, but on national interests. Americans go to the polls tomorrow in a race between vice-president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump. Briefing the media yesterday after the ANC’s sub-committee on international relations held a two-day retreat, Mokonyane said the country’s interest is to build relations for South Africa’s good:
# The agriculture organisation TLU SA says it continue to see red flags for the future of South Africa’s economy. the organisation’s Bennie van Zyl says instead of focusing on educating and empowering people on how to create wealth and play a responsible role in the economy, the government is engaging in emotional, ideological practices that put South Africa’s economic future at risk:
# Western Cape police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged assassination of Cape underworld figure and businessman Mark Lifman. The 57-year-old was shot dead outside the Garden Route Mall in George on Sunday. Lifman was due to appear in the Western Cape High Court today for the Brian Wainstein murder trial. He and his co-accused are facing multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and money laundering. Wainstein was gunned down in his Constantia home in August 2017.
# Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane will today release the independent investigative report on Pretoria High School for Girls. In August, the department hired Johannesburg law firm Mdladlamba Attorneys to determine whether a culture of racism exists at the school. The investigation was launched after 12 white girls were suspended in July for suspected racism. They were subsequently cleared of the allegation during a disciplinary hearing. The department says the investigation will determine what further steps will be taken.
# Kemi Badenoch became the first black woman to lead a major British political party, winning the Conservative leadership with 57-percent of the vote. The 44-year-old Badenoch replaces former prime minister Rishi Sunak and has pledged to lead the party through a period of renewal after its resounding defeat at Britain’s July election. Badenoch will likely back policies to shrink the state and challenge what she says is institutional left-wing thinking. She says it is time to defend the principles of free speech, free enterprise and free markets. Badenoch is the Conservatives’ fifth leader since mid-2016.
# Tennis: World number three Alexander Zverev won the Paris Masters, his seventh career ATP Masters 1000 title. The 27-year-old defeated home favourite Ugo Humbert, 6-2, 6-2, to become the first German man to win the Paris Masters since Boris Becker in 1992. This is Zverev’s second ATP Tour title of the year. Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Croatia’s Nikola Mektic won the doubles title, their fifth ATP Tour title this year.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-54-cents and the euro at 19-rand-9-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-77-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-33-dollar-30-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-738-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-10-cents a barrel.
