# The South African Navy chief calls for the establishment of the Combined Exclusive Maritime Zone of Africa
# And, rugby: The Sharks are back to winning ways against the defending champions Glasgow
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says former Finance minister Tito Mboweni’s endearing self-deprecation, affability and humility belied an illustrious career. Ramaphosa delivered the eulogy at Mboweni’s Special Official Funeral in Tzaneen, Limpopo. He says Mboweni was an activist in the struggle against apartheid and he played a formative role in the development of the ANC’s economic policy as it prepared to govern in 1994:
Ramaphosa added Mboweni was respected by leading economists, titans of business, labour leaders and ordinary people in the country. Ramaphosa says despite his stature and profile, Mboweni never lost the common touch and had a gift to connect to people:
# South African Navy chief Monde Lobese has called for the establishment of the Combined Exclusive Maritime Zone of Africa, a concept that would foster cooperation across borders, streamline maritime administration and promote intra-African trade. The Zone would assist in ensuring the African continent’s maritime security from an enforcement and governance point of view. Lobese says while the 2050 Africa’s Integrated Maritime Strategy was a significant step forward, much work remains to be done.
# A church coffee morning ended in a bomb scare after a member of the congregation brought a live explosive device to the event. It is believed a military history enthusiast brought three shells dating back to World War One, to St Paul’s Church in Withington, Manchester to show a fellow enthusiast. Greater Manchester Police said they were called to reports of a suspicious device. A 25-metre cordon was put in place and an explosive disposal team destroyed the device in a controlled environment.
# And, rugby: The Sharks secured a 28-24 victory in their United Rugby Championship encounter against the Glasgow Warriors. They showed their potential with a squad filled with Springboks, despite having limited training time together. Glasgow Warriors displayed resilience and scored two late tries to narrow the gap. They maintained their third place on the table while the Sharks have now moved up to tenth. In Cape Town, Springbok fullback Damian Willemse put on a masterclass at flyhalf, inspiring his Stormers team to a 34-19 win over Irish province Munster. The win lifted the Stormers off the bottom of the log into tenth spot. Munster leave Cape Town without a bonus point, which might make a big difference to the rest of their season.
