Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Police have found the guns used in the Lusikisiki massacre and two suspects were arrested
# The DA in Johannesburg wants funds used for service delivery rather than renaming Sandton Drive
# And cricket: The Dolphins welcome back David Miller for the T20 Challenge
# Police believe they have recovered the firearms used in the killing of 18 people in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape last month. The high-calibre firearms include three AK-47 automatic rifles and a Mannlicher rifle. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says two suspects have been arrested after the rifles were found in their possession in Flagstaff:
# The DA in Johannesburg is calling on mayor Dada Morero and the coalition government to review its stance on renaming Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive. Khaled achieved fame as the first woman to hijack an aeroplane while a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The DA’s Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku says the funds should rather be used to improve service delivery, like fixing the water crisis:
# An overseas ballot process that has long been seen as sacrosanct by both parties, due to its connection to US military members serving in foreign countries, is the target of multiple Republican-backed lawsuits filed in recent days. The legal assault comes as ballots cast by Americans abroad have become very favourable for Democrats and could be crucial in getting vice president Kamala Harris over the finish line. Former president Donald Trump has since suggested, without evidence, that the overseas vote is a source of fraud. There are about 6.5-million eligible American voters overseas.
# Cricket: The Dolphins welcome back local hero David Miller for their final home T20 Challenge clash against Boland at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban tomorrow. Miller will turn out for the hosts after his recent stint with the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League. The 35-year-old says he is eager to represent his home union again. The Dolphins have won their last two matches, including a good victory over the Knights in Bloemfontein on Wednesday night, and still have an outside chance of making the semi-final.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-57-cents and the euro at 19-rand-5-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-92-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-876-dollars-77-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-702-dollars-88-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-42-cents a barrel.
# And, finally: Children as young as ten will soon be able to be jailed once again in Australia’s Northern Territory, after the government there lowered the age of criminal responsibility. Australian states and territories have been under pressure to raise the age from 10 to 14, in line with other developed countries. The Northern Territory already jails children at a rate eleven times higher than any other jurisdiction in the country, and almost all of them are Aboriginal. The territory’s new government says criminalising younger children will help divert them away from future crime.
