# The Centre for Environmental Management at the University of the Free State celebrated its 30th anniversary. Established in 1994, the centre has grown exponentially, starting with just four students enrolled to now welcoming nearly 50 students each year. Head of the centre, professor Olusola Ololade, says they have produced 592 master’s graduates, 19 doctoral graduates in Environmental Management, and 126 honours and postgraduate diploma recipients in Integrated Water Management. She says they also boast a diverse and international student body, representing 18 countries.
# Two University of Witwatersrand students, Swelihle Sibiya and Andile Mgomezulu, were some of the winners of the Southern Africa Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference Industry Solutions Challenge. More than 300 students from across Southern Africa entered this year’s competition, where postgraduate and undergraduate students developed innovative solutions that tackle industry-inspired challenges. Sibiya, who is currently pursuing a master’s in Geographic Information Systems, won the R&D Challenge. Mgomezulu, a third-year Aeronautical Engineering student, won the Huawei Challenge.
# Pretoria is set to host the Resolute Roboticon, a coding and robotics competition, later this month. Organised by Resolute Education and Oxford University Press South Africa, the event will bring together over 600 learners from 70 schools worldwide. This year’s theme, City of the Future, challenges students to come up with modern solutions for real-world problems. Participants will engage in multidisciplinary learning and teamwork, with categories for different age groups, culminating in tech prizes for the winners.
# Cape Town deputy mayor, Eddie Andrews, will participate in the Cape Town Marathon on Sunday, championing his Soles for Souls campaign. This is an initiative dedicated to providing 42-thousand-200 pairs of school shoes to children in need across Cape Town. Andrews says he has partnered with the Santa Shoebox Project and the online fundraising platform GivenGain:
# And finally: Award-winning American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift will release a book on the 29th of November, to commemorate her record-breaking Eras Tour. The 256-page Eras Tour Book includes never-before-seen photos of the tour along with the stories and memories from Swift herself. She is also set to release her latest album The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology on vinyl. It will include all 31 songs featured on the double album released earlier this year, as well as four additional bonus tracks.
