Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with cricket: South Africa is through to the Women’s T20 World Cup semifinals after the West Indies knocked out England in their final Group B match in Dubai. England posted 141 for seven in their 20 overs, and the Windies reached the target with the help of captain Hayley Matthews, who scored a half-century in her 100th T20 International, and Qiana Joseph with 52. After finishing top of Group B, the Windies will now face New Zealand in the semifinals, while South Africa will take on defending champions Australia.
Meanwhile, Proteas player Aiden Markram describes being captain of the Test side as a dream come true. The white ball captain will lead South Africa in the first Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur from the 21st. Injured skipper Temba Bavuma travelled with the Proteas to Bangladesh yesterday with the hope to be fit for the second Test in Chattagram from the 29th. Markram says he’d been dreaming of leading South Africa since he was a child, and will lean on his experience in the shorter formats.
# Soccer: South Africa remains second in Group K behind Uganda after playing out to a one-all draw with Congo in Brazzaville in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Bafana Bafana’s Elias Mokwana’s goal in the 33rd minute was cancelled out by Mons Bassouamina’s strike on the stroke of halftime. South Africa will need to win either of its remaining two qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan next month to book a place in Afcon.
More soccer news: Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been appointed England’s new manager from 1 January next year. The 51-year-old will succeed Gareth Southgate, who resigned after the European Championship in July, in which England were defeated two-one by Spain in the final. The German will become the third non-Englishman to hold the post after Sven-Goran Eriksson of Sweden and Italian Fabio Capello. He will be assisted by internationally renowned English coach Anthony Barry.
# And finally, rugby: The All Blacks have made three injury-enforced changes to their squad for the season-ending tour, where they will face Japan, England, Ireland, France and Italy. Loose forwards, Ethan Blackadder, Luke Jacobson, and Dalton Papali’I, are all injured. Uncapped flanker Peter Lakai and Waikato Chiefs lock Josh Lord have been added to a squad that has been reduced in size from 36 to 35. All Blacks coach, Scott Robertson, says the injuries open up opportunities for some other players:
