# Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, is set to hand over music equipment to Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy at a gala dinner in Cape Town this evening. This is in collaboration with Betway South Africa. The academy, which was established in 2014, provides affordable, quality and professional tuition. During the event, the minister and Betway SA will also pledge financial support to the academy, to enable them to service a larger community base with their music lessons.
# KFC South Africa has donated 127-thousand-rand to the Pretoria Sunrise Rotary Club, bolstering their collaborative efforts to elevate early childhood education in Pretoria East. The funds will support the Kungwini Early Childhood Learning Centre and the Sweet Angels Crèche, benefiting around 100 children. The club says this support will enable them to offer improved care and early learning opportunities, that are crucial for the development of the young minds they serve.
# Twenty learners from Talfalah Primary School in Manenberg on the Cape Flats will compete in the International Music Festival in Thailand in December. Established in 2018, the marching band has already won several local competitions. Talfalah is a no-fee school, accommodating learners from Philippi, Brown’s Farm and Gugulethu. The band’s instructor, Layla Hendricks, says they are excited for the opportunity to represent the school and South Africa.
# The University of Pretoria launched Tuning into the Universe, an illustrated booklet for children in Grades four to six. The booklet addresses the burning questions children have about the sun, the moon and the stars. The university’s Puleng Tsie says the booklet showcases South Africa’s mega telescopes, the Southern African Large Telescope, and MeerKAT. She says it also introduces learners to the astonishing research and discoveries about the universe that scientists are making. Tsie says the next generation of people working in astronomy will be young learners.
# And finally: Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s, The Wild Robot, has topped the international box office, making over two-billion-rand to date. The movie is based on the children’s books by Peter Brown and features an all-star voice cast that includes Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, and Bill Nighy. Other films that are currently dominating the international box office include Warner Brothers’ Joker: Folie á Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Marvel/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
