# First up, we have rugby: The Lions improved from sixth to third place on the United Rugby Championship log when they won their third match of the season in Wales yesterday. The Johannesburg team beat Dragons 23-19 at Rodney Parade and now only trails Leinster and Glasgow Warriors, who have both played one match more. The Bulls improved to fourth position after beating Ospreys, while the Sharks are currently in 14th position and the Stormers in 16th after losing yet again this weekend.
# Cricket: Defending champions Australia secured their place in the Women’s T20 World Cup semifinals with a nine-run win over India in Sharjah. Australia posted 151 for eight with opener Grace Harris top-scoring with 40. In reply, India was restricted to 142 for nine in their 20 overs. Meanwhile, England is top of Group B after recording an emphatic ten-wicket victory over Scotland. England is guaranteed to qualify for the semifinals with a win over the West Indies in their final pool match tomorrow.
More cricket news: Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene has been reappointed as Mumbai Indians’ head coach, after previously holding the position from 2017 to 2022. He replaces former South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who had a two-year stint as head coach of the five-time Indian Premier League champions. Under Boucher, Mumbai made the playoffs last year, but this year they finished at the bottom of the points table with just four wins in 14 games. Jayawardene says he is looking forward to this exciting challenge.
# Tennis: Italian Jannik Sinner made sure of ending the year in the number one ranking when he won the Shanghai Masters, becoming the first man to win more than six titles in a calendar year since Andy Murray won nine in 2016. The 23-year-old defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic 7-6, 6-3, making him the youngest champion in the tournament’s history. Djokovic was bidding to become the third man to win 100 tour-level titles. Sinner, who has beaten the Serb in their last three meetings, says there is no secret:
# And finally, road running: Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich broke the women’s world record by nearly two minutes at the Chicago Marathon. The 30-year-old clocked a time of two-hours-nine-minutes-and-57-seconds to surpass Ethiopian Tigst Assefa’s previous record set in Berlin last year. Chepngetich, who also won in 2021 and ’22, is the first woman to break two-hours-and-ten-minutes in the marathon. In the men’s race, Kenya’s John Korir ran a personal best time of two-hours-two-minutes-and-44-seconds to claim victory. Chepngetich says breaking the world record is amazing:
