# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola has announced heightened crime-fighting strategies for the festive season. Speaking at the launch of the National Safer Festive Season Operations in Tshwane, Masemola emphasised increased police visibility to combat serious crimes. He said police will focus on priority crimes including border security and gender-based violence and femicide:
# Seven people have died and nine others sustained serious injuries when a truck and two Toyota Quantum’s collided head-on on the N2 between Mthatha and Mtentu, in the Eastern Cape this morning. The provincial Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa says it was very misty when the two vehicles collided. He says the driver of the truck has fled the scene and police and law enforcement officials are hot on the heels of the driver:
# Union federation Saftu general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, will today join a mass protest for Palestinians in Potchefstroom, North West. Saftu says this mass demonstration marks one year of ongoing ethnic cleansing and genocide against the Palestinian people. Saftu’s Mogoshadi Maserumule stated that the federation firmly opposes all forms of oppression and has pledged its solidarity with the Palestinian people in their fight against apartheid and occupation:
# Cricket: A place in the T20 World Cup semifinal is at stake for the Protea women in tonight’s final Group B match against Bangladesh in Dubai. South Africa is currently in second place in the group behind the Windies and before England, who has one match in hand. Bangladesh lies in fourth place. The top two teams in each of the two groups go through to the penultimate round, to be played on Thursday and Friday next week, with the final next Sunday. Tonight’s encounter against Bangladesh starts at 6 pm in the Dubai International Stadium.
# And, pope Francis met Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky at the Vatican yesterday for their second face-to-face encounter in four months. The two men, who previously met on the sidelines of a G7 summit in southern Italy in June, held talks for 35 minutes at the Vatican’s apostolic palace. A Vatican statement provided no details about the meeting but said a subsequent meeting between the Ukrainian leader and the Vatican’s chief diplomat included discussions about the state of the war and ways in which it could be brought to an end.
