Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Springbok Women performance coach, Swys de Bruin, has made a couple of changes to his squad for their final Women’s Fifteen match against Italy at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town tomorrow. Jakkie Cilliers, Libbie Janse van Rensburg and Maceala Samboya are injured, with Nomawethu Mabenge and the uncapped Nombuyekezo Mdliki included in the match-23. Nolusindiso Booi returns as captain. De Bruin says the team’s mission is to add building blocks to their ultimate destination, the World Cup in England next year.
# Tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy describes 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal’s retirement as tough news for the tennis world. The 38-year-old Spaniard announced yesterday that this season would be the final one of his illustrious career. Sinner says Nadal taught the young players how to behave on court and to stay humble and not change with success. Sinner’s rivalry with another Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz, is seen as the new version of the Big Three consisting of Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
# Cricket: The West Indies defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, to boost their hopes of reaching the Women’s T20 World Cup semifinals. Spinner Karishma Ramharack took four wickets as Bangladesh were restricted to 103 for eight. In reply, the West Indies raced to the target in just 12.5 overs. This victory has moved the West Indies to the top of Group B on four points, level with South Africa and England, with the latter having played one game less.
# Motorsport: Haas and Toyota have agreed to a multi-year technical partnership, which will see the Japanese manufacturer return to Formula One after a 15-year absence. Toyota, which had its own works team, will become Haas’ official technical partner through its Toyota Gazoo Racing division. As part of the agreement, Toyota will provide the design, technical and manufacturing services, while Haas will give technical expertise and commercial benefits. Toyota Gazoo’s logo will appear on Haas’ cars at the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, next weekend.
# And finally, cycling: Mark Cavendish’s final professional race is set to be the two-day Tour de France Criterium in Singapore on 9 and 10 November. The 39-year-old has not competed since he broke the Tour de France stage wins record with his 35th victory in July. Cavendish confirmed he would not do another Tour de France after receiving his knighthood at Windsor Castle earlier this month, but added he was committed to completing his 2024 race schedule. He has won 165 races since the start of his professional career in 2005.
