# The DA in Gauteng is demanding an immediate investigation into the hospitalisation of 74 matric learners on the West Rand due to suspected food poisoning. The learners from Fochville Secondary School, Badirile Secondary School, and Wedela Technical School were attending a matric camp when they suffered from stomach cramps and diarrhoea. The DA’s Sergio Isa dos Santos says it’s unacceptable that matriculants who are preparing for their final examinations now find themselves in hospital due to negligence:
Meanwhile, minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says cabinet wishes the Class of 2024 well as they prepare for their National Senior Certificate exams, starting on the 21st of this month. Cabinet supports the learners, recognising their efforts and the significance of these exams for their future opportunities. Ntshavheni encouraged learners to remain focused and confident, as hard work and dedication are key during this crucial time:
# Former US president Barack Obama has urged Americans to vote for vice-president Kamala Harris next month, saying the country does not need another four years of Donald Trump. He made his first appearance on the campaign trail for Harris, speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania. The presidential election is expected to be determined by a handful of states, including Pennsylvania. Obama denounced his successor as a selfish politician who only cared about his ego, money and status:
# Motorsport: Haas and Toyota have agreed to a multi-year technical partnership, which will see the Japanese manufacturer return to Formula One after a 15-year absence. Toyota, which had its own works team, will become Haas’ official technical partner through its Toyota Gazoo Racing division. As part of the agreement, Toyota will provide the design, technical and manufacturing services, while Haas will give technical expertise and commercial benefits. Toyota Gazoo’s logo will appear on Haas’ cars at the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, next weekend.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-44-cents and the euro at 19-rand-9-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-80-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-657-dollars-2-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-642-dollars-80-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 78-dollars-68-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Information, Communication Technologies and Media Regulators Forum has been launched to tackle data privacy and protect consumers from harmful content. The forum includes the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa, the Film and Publication Board, the Domain Name Authority, and the Information Regulator. The forum’s chairperson, Tshiamo Maluleka-Disemelo, says by uniting these entities, the forum seeks to build a safer digital environment, ensuring that the rights of South Africans are protected in an increasingly complex online landscape.
